3RD ANNUAL SRI LANKAN MUSLIM EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD 2015/16

On Saturday the 6th February 2016, the Education & Community Development Committee (EdCom) of the Sri Lankan Muslim Cultural Centre (SLMCC) in Harrow, United Kingdom, welcomed over 400 guests to its 3rd Annual Educational Excellence Award  ceremony.  The centre was packed with people following various walks of life from many areas and regions across the country. Whether it be a man or woman, young or old each individual was there with a common purpose; to recognise those who had excelled in their educational endeavours from within the community.   

Prior to the award ceremony talks were held by a few highly esteemed guests, among them; Ash Sheikh Mansoor Naleemi, Dr. Rayes Mustafa and Dr. Deen, the focus of the night being on education, each talk gave valuable insight into the importance of knowledge and how it should be used in the modern era. The speeches proved highly motivational and provided the perfect backdrop with which to conduct the award ceremony. The guests stayed behind thereafter to hand out the trophies and certificates to the award winners.

The first set of awards was for the best 11 Plus results, with four winners

  • Iyaad Riyas
  • Hamtha Haleem
  • Arzim Asmil
  • Fathima Farha

The next set of awards was given to GCSE students. The performance within this category in particular was very satisfying for all to behold as a number of students produced outstanding GCSE and a number of them obtaining straight A*/A grades, The following students were awarded;

  • Haflan Haleem -Gold Award
  • Nashhath Niyas – Silver Award
  • Bilal Rayes – Bronze Award
  • Aliy Faisal – Complimentary Award
  • Zahra Akbar – Complimentary Award
  • Zainab Rizvi – Complimentary Award

The GCE A-level students also performed very well in their exams, all of whom are conducting their further education in some of the top universities in the UK;

  • Aadhil Rizvi -Gold Award
  • Shafeer Rishad – Silver Award
  • Minha Mansoor – Bronze Award
  • Hana Oleed – Complimentary Award
  • Rukaiya Rizvi – Complimentary Award

There were awards for university students who achieved 1st class degrees or had completed their Masters. The following students were awarded;

  • Mohamed Sajith Dahlan
  • Mohammed Riyas
  • Rizni Kariapper
  • Rizwan Zain Sackaf

The Outstanding Achievement Award this year was awarded to four individuals who brought pride and honour to the Sri Lankan Muslims.

  • Roshana Kariapper - She achieved her CCNA in 2014, CCNP in 2015 and now she has achieved her goal of becoming, CCIE which is considered as doctorate in Computer Networking. She is the first Muslim woman in the world who is certified as a CCIE for Collaboration.
  • Jazeem Abdul Hameed – He recently became the first Sri Lankan to be awarded the ‘Fellowship’ of the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (IOEE) in the UK.
  • Muaz Nawaz – He is one of the TeenTech winners for the health-care category held at the Royal Society in London.
  • Khadeeja Rifan – She came first in the flag competition 2015 London, where school children from all around London participated.

This was a fantastic opportunity to formally celebrate the wealth of talent that exists within the Sri Lankan Muslim Community. The day saw everyone reflect on past achievements but also gave everyone encouragement and inspiration to look to their own future. SLMCC and all its members are proud of the successes of all prize winners and nominees and hope to provide them a platform from which to become more confident, responsible and ultimately successful members of the community.
